The alpine tundra here in Alaska is amazing. The plants here are unique and have adapted in many ways to exist in this sort of environment. Looking out at the landscape, it can appear like a single carpet of moss with varying colors throughout, but on closer inspection (as seen in this video) there’s clearly a lot going on within every square inch.

I shot the footage for this video during my the the adventure I covered in my last video (“Alpine Wandering: Ridgelines, Meadows, and Waterfalls”). Whether or not I actually film this sort of thing, I often make it a point to take a moment–usually toward the beginning of an adventure–to allow myself to slow down and just look closer at what’s around me. I find that it helps me to connect more fully with the environment I’m in and I more thoroughly enjoy each step–no matter where the journey takes me.

This was also a fun opportunity for me to get to know some of the plants here. Everything is so different here, compared to the desert of Arizona where many of my previous adventure took place, and I’m excited to learn more about how things work here. I’ve mentioned before that I grew up here in Alaska, so I’m already somewhat familiar with this place, but I’ve found that my time in the desert taught me to be more curious and explore more deeply. I’m looking forward to the adventure that will come.
