I took a little time to watch the river freeze. It’s a gradual process—the water keeps flowing and the ice keeps building. Everything is becoming slower and more quiet–flowing toward stillness. And it’s interesting to me that while the water is undergoing such a dramatic transformation, it doesn’t seem to fight the process. It keeps flowing where it can, but not because it’s struggling to survive against increasing cold. It simply continues to exist as it always has, allowing the changes to happen in their time. The wild movement will all return next spring, but what a shame it would be if it didn’t allow this season into its heart the way it does so effortlessly.
